Tony Stark?

Well.

He’s complications-tripled. He has PTSD, a focus-span of 2 seconds and he consumes so much alcohol day and night to the point of gargling it. He has daddy issues and trust issues, survivor’s guilt which he acquired from a cave in Afghanistan, from a man named Yinsen. He has a whirring machine called an arc reactor in his sternum that keeps him alive and powers a pretty badass red and gold battle-suit. He’s a public charmer, a playboy. He makes the media trip on his feet. Victoria’s Secret models make beelines after him when he’s holding a party or a ball or a function and he thinks stripper poles are necessary in Stark Industries private jets. Sarcasm never leaves him and he doesn’t know how to be a team player. He’s unstable. Emotionally, even though he acts and says other, even though he buries that instability in his workshop, in his room, in his own mind. He builds things endlessly and incessantly, from elements to unbreakable smartphones to manic toasters until he can’t function anymore. He mutters to himself and babbles when he’s nervous and chats with his AI. Coffee is his only meal, considers it his only friend when Pepper’s away in a board meeting, when Rhodey’s in Iraq, when Happy’s being a happy chauffeur somewhere else. He has an IQ of an unfathomable level, and his brain is full of equations, codes an schematics. He cackles at the thought of making Fury, well, furious, and believes that Phil Coulson’s first name is Agent. He faces death like an old lover, but he quivers at the thought of Natasha sticking a syringe to his neck. Again. Bruce Banner is his lab buddy, but he teases him, provokes and provokes until the green guy is annoyed and he ends up with five cracked ribs and painful eleven stitches. He’s arrogant and he has an exhibitionist streak. He likes to spar verbally with Clint, hides under the pretense that the guy annoys him even though he upgrades his crossbow every now and then. He goes to Costco and buy Poptarts for Thor, let’s him show up naked in his teammates’ showers and requests for the god to bring Asgard mead here in Midgard and gets the Avengers and some SHIELD Agents drunk. He argues with Steve a lot, calls him a dick and acts like one himself, blows a raspberry behind his faceplate during missions and annoys him at every turn. But he repairs the Captain America costume anyway and upgrades it with Kevlar and fixes the shield without batting an eyelash or missing a beat. He makes innuendos to everyone especially Cap, they bicker and laugh together and eat sandwiches and watch Casablanca in the media room. He thinks painkillers are more important than water. He buys everyone shawarmas and boxes of pizzas and burgers until their fridge is bursting with leftovers. He doesn’t know the concept of personal belongings, and eats anything in their kitchen though they have their own shelves and he practically delights in it, reasons that it tastes better when stolen. He deems himself unworthy to be loved, to be cared for. He spends tons of money on suits, and shoes and tools and cars and hates ballet shows and tasers with a burning passion. He leaves meetings and debriefings early and he’s never punctual for anything. And he can swallow a bullet, a grenade, a Doombot, anything for you and be a martyr and all, but declares himself an anti-hero.

But you see, his complexities, his imperfections, that’s what make him Tony Stark. It’s what makes him function and what makes him perfect and what makes him unique. He’s a paradox made flesh, he contradicts his own principles for the sake of others. He may have the propensity to be stubborn, cold, domineering, calculating, vengeful; a capability to be a mess, an asshole, a faker, but then again, it also means that he has the ability to love genuinely, deeply, and forever.

For me, that’s Tony Stark in a nutshell.
